Srs airbag service - urgent - 2002 v70
Hi there,
I just have a quick question regarding my 2002 Volvo V70.
A warning light on the dash saying "SRS AIRBAG SERVICE - URGENT" came up just recently and after taking the car to a local Volvo dealership, they tell me that I need a complete new instrument panel (including programming software) to cure this.
Being a mechanic myself, I was expecting them to tell me that the under-seat connector (or similar) had developed a bad connection and could be simply soldered up. Not that I would need a complete new instrument panel (at a cost of £730!).
My question then is whether or not you guys see this quite often on the V70 model like mine? It seems a rather expensive fix to me and I would like to know whether or not this is a commen fault. And if so, what is it that goes wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, Matt.

Yes, that sounds a bit fishy; what exactly did they tell you was wrong with the instrument panel that it requires replacement?
At a minimum, get a 2nd opinion.

My car has the same warning message after I drove it in very hot weather without turning on the air-conditioner or the fan (cause my friend in the passenger seat cannot bear with them! ). I will call local Volvo repair service tomorrow to see what I/they can do to clear the code.

I was told it could simply be the seat belt lock housing?

my SRS light =passenger airbag out
My SRS light came on a few years ago, Dealer said it was passenger airbag, and >$1K to replace. I didn't replace it. Now light does not come on, cleared after recent code check of something else. I have a 2000 XC V70 wagon.

Ok 2nd opinion get a full system scan, try reset, from what I'm told by my friend Volvo Master Tech of twelve plus years "The Scotty " as he is referred to by other Master Techs. I have been at the garage when he gets calls comming in from dealerships This appears to be comming an increasing problem with older Volvo's IDK if there is a Campaign=not recall, ie voluntary by Volvo but it kinda of sounding like there should be? Please anyone that has or has had this problem contact Volvo NA at their toll free # not sure if it's copyrignted so not posting it . LOL, last I knewed thry Patented every part on all of thier vehicles,, and I don't blame them due to R+D costs. You can get campaing info from several federal web sites and with a little work get all such that apply to your vehicle.GL.

Was told that the fault is the air bag in the driver's seat. Also told that it would be cheaper to buy a seat from a scrap yard($300) than to take the seat apart and replace the air bag($800!
