Default 850 na orig exhaust size ??

I have a 96 850 10 valve, and was wondering if anyone knew what the original exhaust diameter was ?

I know the layout and components, just not the diameter...

I know that the last straight pipe at the back is bigger than the rest.
I thought it might be around the 2-2 1/4.
Going in for a new system (Cat and everything behind it) on tuesday.
Remove all the crud thats been installed by previous owner.
I'm thinking a 2 1/4 would be about right for the replacement.

Going by the info I have found regarding exhaust theory and practice on the net, a 2.4 ltr with about 150bhp should use a 2-2 1/4 exh.
Bigger and it'll start losing bottom end torque.
I think (for a n/a) that 2.5 is far to big.
I had a 5ltr v8 with a 2.5.
So half the capacity = half the flow needs.
Double the diameter = 4x the flow
Hmmmmm, tommorow will tell....

EDIT, just had a look under the car, current system which is not the original, is 57mmOD so that would be 2.25.

Default Tadaa done

OK, It's early days, only just got the system done today.
Whole system had been pretty badly stuffed around by previous.
Mish mash of 2, 2.25 and 2.5, piping, non original cat, two 'hotdogs' and the original 'box' muffler.

Whole new system now.
2" from one end to the other, with straight through mufflers.
Very deep note, I mean really deep, mine shaft deep.
Can barely hear it at idle, under load with the windows shut, I think it may still need a little more 'muffling' ( is there such a word ? )
Can't notice any drop in top end, but the bottom and midrange have definately improved.

Better verdict once I've lived with it a while.

So, here's some pics

Just a quick vid (3.1Mg), not much of a rev as it was a cold start as you might be able to see from the water spitting out.

If anyone is interested I'll do a better one later...

Yes it is, but trying to get an account with the two you mention is worse.
I did actually try those two first.

Try this one

I just was trying to fit a centre section into my 96 850 GLE exhaust pipe here in Canada.
The pipe at the centre of the car is 2 3/4 inches outside diameter.
It is sometimes hard to find the correct parts for this car the GLE 10 valve, as it was not sold in the U.S., but every computer local auto parts stores are set up for the American system!

When I was working on my 95 850 I had a hard time because the pipes vary in diameter and at times aren't necessarily round. That and they are metric so the normal 2 - 2 1/4 - 2.5 fittings don't always fit properly without a lot of clamping or some welding.

Well I got lucky yesterday as I went to the Pick & Pull in Kelowna BC and picked up a used muffler complete with piping. Usually when the yard people cut out the catalytic convertor they chop the front end of exhaust pipe off, but this time they cut close to the convertor and I got a muffler assembly in good condition.
Not only that there was a 50% off sale so I got the whole thing for 15 dollars and mounted it yesterday too!
