Default 98 v70 turbo transmission question

Hello. I just got my 98 v70 less than a month ago and while driving yesterday the car went to 2500/3000 rpm then shifted really hard. Then it went to almost 5000 rpm before it shifted again. The fluid is Black almost and over full from guy I got it from. Any ideas?? Its my daily and I really like it so far??? Thanks! Oh! can I do a filter change? On line it says I can only do it if transmission is disassembled. I would like any input. Thanks again!!

I don't think there's a transmission filter to service, but if you say the transmission fluid is black, you may want to drop the pan and clean out any debris. When you drop the pan you should get about half of the fluid out via the drain plug (about 4 quarts give or take). Considering you suspect the transmission was overfilled to begin with you may want to measure what you drained out and refill with slightly less - then run the engine and put in drive to let the transmission pump then recheck the dipstick level, noting the cold/warm fill marks to "sneak up" on the proper level. Since you are already showing signs of burnt fluid, many techs recommend a simple drain/fill and not a full flush.

Funny thing is, I took the car to the shop. One of the clamps on the intercooler broke and I had a major vac leak. Nothing wrong with trans except dirty fluid.

that's great news. So all that is left is a simple drain/fill and the transmission will thank you for it :-)
