Default 98 V70xc has all the ingredients, still no start??????? Please help.

Hello, been snooping for a little bit and this site is great. But now is the time I need some help that is leaving me stumped.

1998 V70xc AWD

Is getting gas, has great spark and the air system is very clean and free flowing. No start?????

The car sat for 4 years, last time it was started was two years ago. The owner had it towed to me to work on it as I am wanting to buy it if I can get it running and it all checks out.

Starts off that the tow guy dents it and gets blood all over? Ugh...... then my grandmother backs her car into it. UUGGGHHHHH....no this no start issue. Im getting frustrated to say the least. Its cosmetically beautiful......well, minus the new dent, rear bumper and tail light now. Oh, and all the dead mice and layer of dirt on the whole thing.

Anyways, Im rambling. What do I check now? I had to fix the fuel pump, (did the hole in the floor board trick) so I went over the entire fuel system. Works great now. Fixed that and it did start first try once fixed but sounded really bad.....so I shut it off. There was crap in the timing belt area, cleaned that out tried to restart and now nothing at all, just cranks and cranks and cranks. No even a fire with starting fluid directly info the throttle body.

PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks.

78 views.....no reply's?

So, I hooked up a nice code reader and no codes. Cleaned out the cam belt panel, also pulled the dist. And cleaned that as well. Only bad fuse was a cig lighter hole?

Please, any ideas or things I need to check? Could relays or some electronic part be bad with out throwing a code?

Did you drain the old fuel from the tank? After 4 years you really don't have gasoline any more. Depending on the local "formulation" most unleaded fuel is junk in less than a year. Even stuff like StaBil can't keep gas that old good.

Elaborate a bit more. Exactly what did you do in the timing belt area?

It may be that you are off a tooth or two off on engine timing and things will be good again if you get it timed correctly. It may also be that the the engine timing wound off quite a bit and the valves got bent in the process.

Start by checking and rechecking the timing. Once you are satisfied that it is correct if the car still doesn't run my next step would be a compression test.

Hmmm.

A car needs 4 things to start and stay running; Air, Fuel, Spark, and COMPRESSION. Check compression. If you let it jump time, it's likely over and you will have no compression.

Thanks for the replies. As for what I did in the timing area, I removed the cover and cleaned out the mouse nest along with its petrified resident. Looked as if he'd gotten caught up I the belt tensioner pulpy at some point long ago.

I also checked the cam timing marks. They were both lined up. I couldn't see the one on the crank so I could have a problem there but I find that unlikely since the the cams lined up and the car was running when parked, but I'll look into that more. Also since I was in there I checked the belt for damage from the mouse, didn't see anything.

I was avoiding a compression test because I don't have the tool but ill get ahold of one and check it out. I'm also going to get ahold of a fuel pressure gauge to make sure it's in speck, 43 psi correct?

I'm thinking I may have a problem with the crank position sensor. That make sense to any of you guys? I checked the resistance, I'm getting >200 ohms. I believe that's the speck, isn't it? I thinking I may be getting a bad signal, either the pickup on the sensor is gummed up or the pickup on the flywheel is. What's your guys opinion? Hopefully this is my issue and a quick fix.

There is a good chance that the critters ate through some wires and when you started the car the wires shorted out now it wont start.

I checked over most all the wires I could, no bites that I can see. Just some back wire covers in a few open areas.

I am going to check fuel pressure and compression this weekend.

Im really leaning towards a bad crank position sensor. It reads at the right ohms but could be gummed up and not reading the mark properly. I sort of messed with it a little bit and I got it to sputter start twice then nothing again. I need to remove it completely and see it some more.

It's ALIVE!!!

Stuck valve in cylinder #2.

PSI in fuel rail is 41psi. Cylinders were at around 150ish. Cylider #2 is dead. Took the cam cover off and tapped around on the intake side of cylinder #2's valves. Freed it up as the air we were blasting into it stopped flowing back out elsewhere.

Replaces the timing belt and got it all in check. Ran seafoam through it and its purring pretty now. Also fixed a hole in one of the fuel lines while I was at it, working with EFI lines is a PITA. Now to break the seized calipers loose and rebuild them and its good to go!
