Default CV Boot

Quick overview question on CV Boots. My 98 V70 with 185K miles and original boots need to be replaced I am told. I believe it. Question is what do the boots do? How much should it cost. I was quoted around $800. That might include both sides.

They hold grease in for the axle joints (and keep dirt out). The price sounds about right if it includes all four boots. However, it may be cheaper to replace the whole axle because of less labor. I wouldn't get really cheap axles, I've seen a few cheap aftermarket ones cause problems.
