The engine light is on and I had the light diagnosed and was told one of the possibilities was the EGR valve was bad...

Instead of a PCV valve, 5 cylinder Volvos, at least from 1999, have an "oil-trap" system, which in my experience WILL clog somewhere around 140,000 miles or sooner. This can lead to a camshaft seal leak or worse, and can also trigger CEL's (including CEL's indicating problems with the variable valve solenoid, actually signaling inadequate oil supply and or pressure for the valve).

Failing to get the oil trap replaced every 125-140,000 (at a cost of about $500, 80% of it labor) will risk expensive seal leaks AND introduce uncertainty in diagnosing apparently unrelated CEL codes.
