Default help please

Hi i have a 1998 v70 .had for a couple of years without fault.in the last couple of weeks a couple of faults have appeared and have had a look and cany see anything obvious wrong.Fault 1 , when driving there is a buzzing noise from steering column area and brake pedal acts as if the abs is cutting in by juddering on braking but the braking is very poor.i have checked the abs sensors and rings for damage and nothing obvious is showing cracks breaks etc.have had the system scanned and nothing shows up.the problem is getting worse and more frequent now and seems to happen more when on short journeys and when turning slightly.Fault 2 is on starting the vehicle there is a whining sound a bit like you hear on the mini power steering pumps , all fluids look fine as does the belt .please help as it is now getting i feel dangerous to drive.many thanks in advance

Do you feel the vibrations when driving with the gas on? does it change when you lift off the pedal? Does it feel different when turning left or right versus straight? Did you inspect your half shafts for torn boots or grease leaks? I'd suspect either a wheel bearing or a CV joint is acting up. The ABS may totally be unrelated as you may be feeling the vibration through the pedal or wheels. Do the brakes lock up if pressed hard or pull to one side? Its possible to have a stuck valve in the ABS unit - normally when the ABS control module goes you'd get codes and a warning light (just had this on my S40 - car pulled to one side and had weak braking as only 3 wheels were getting pressure from the ABS unit (no codes because the controller and pump were ok). If the car stops straight but has a pulsating pedal that varies with speed, you may have a warped rotor. What I'd do is jack up the front end from the center to lift both front wheels and hand spin the wheels to listen for noises. Then I'd do a test drive to see if the noise and vibration changes with speed, with left/right turns, then test the braking action to see if it pulls or locks a wheel.
