Default Moderate Engine and Turbo rebuild, Lots of questions, and some statements.

1998 V70 XC. 2.4L

I have noticed that there appear to be no real gear heads on this forum, I really hope I can be proven wrong. I'm somewhat of a shadetree mechanic and "saved" a Volvy a while back and have since fallen in love with it. Bonus being, I do all of my own work (saves money and is a fun hobby), regardless of what is wrong. I have the ability and know how, well, somewhat most of the time, and if not I sure do learn fast. Hahah

Back story:
I started noticing coolant flowing out of the overflow at the radiator one day when I got home from work. The next day going to work, I noticed that the temp ran up fast.......great. I get to work and check the dipstick (knowing what this could mean) and yupp, I have coolant in my oil. Wasnt to bad, but I knew it would likely get worse. I would occasionaly add more collent and check the dipstick. Car ran fine otherwise. It did heat up awfully fast though. Well, about a month and a half later it started running rough (yeah, that long. Its damn cold out, I'm super busy and have don't have a great workspace. Notice I said shadetree mechanic!) so i check the oil for the last time, and its ALL foam and yellow. Time to park the car.

breakdown
Long story short. I get the head off. (broke a head bolt in the process, FUDGE) The cylinder #2 misfire code I have been getting checks out, burnt intake valve. Going to resurface the head, install all new valve seals and check out that valve on #2 to see if it need replaced. I also plan to rebuild the turbo, (and throw in some goodies from IPD while I am at it ), which leads to some of my questions;

questions
• Can a failed turbo lead to coolant into the oil?
• How to I tell what turbo I have exactly, my badge is worn, all I can see is the serial number, which is 7510004.
• I think I can make out TD04HL, but isn't there two options for this type of turbo?
• Where is the best place to get a turbo rebuild kit? Ebay?
• Does anyone make a head bolt drill sleeve (to drill center for an easyout) for these engines?
• Anyone on here familiar with the IPD turbo parts?
• Can anyone tell me what these are for (from the full felpo head gasket set)

statements
Everyone who says, taking the turbos off on these engine is smoking crack. either they state this for the non AWD versions, or they know some tricks I don't. AND, some of the engineering that went into this engine layout......what the! Bolts in bizarre places and hard to reach angels have never made any mechanic happy. Volvo engineers must hate mechanics. Least now I know why (well, even more so) they cost so much to have worked on!

I really hope I can get at least SOME of these questions taken care of, OR pointed in the right direction.

THANKS for the help in advance!

Photo of my work as it stand for your viewing pleasure, well, the turbo is off now too.

Damn I just registered at this forum!

I've noticed there seems o be many many Volvo forums on the web, and i couldn't tell which ones had the most active and technically savvy members. Have you had better luck else where or do Volvo owners typically not do their own auto work.

Can't much help with your current project, but sure does look fun!

• Can a failed turbo lead to coolant into the oil? (No, but if you have coolant into the oil you might have damaged the turbo not sure....)
• How to I tell what turbo I have exactly, my badge is worn, all I can see is the serial number, which is 7510004. (From what i know you have a light pressure turbo witch is a TD04HL-13G turbo if you don't mind the money put in a td04hl -16t its a high pressure and your engine can take it but don't go over 13psi)
• I think I can make out TD04HL, but isn't there two options for this type of turbo?
• Where is the best place to get a turbo rebuild kit? Ebay? (Don't ever buy a turbo from ebay!!!! Worst idea ever. I would try a dealer or a trusted mechanic or you could do it yourself or just buy a new turbo.)
• Does anyone make a head bolt drill sleeve (to drill center for an easyout) for these engines?
• Anyone on here familiar with the IPD turbo parts? (I know a little about IPD i buy most of my stuff that are in my 1998 V70R from them.)
• Can anyone tell me what these are for (from the full felpo head gasket set) ( I am not sure exactly what you are asking.. Is it what is in the bag?

THANKS mau5pad for the reply! Yes, the parts in the bag, I didn't use them/didn't need them. Found that the one set of brownish seals were bottom injector intake manifold seals, I did use those eventhough my car did not originally have them installed. PaddyG, I dunno, I am only on this volvo site but recently found the VolvoXC forum so I might sign up on there. TO ME, volvo owners are either to rich to work on their own stuff, to yuppie or hipster to know how to wrench or just lack general knowledge to work on the volvo they own, but thats just my general conclusion. I mean, I'm a guy who is right at home in a black tie event or a redneck mud bog, so I meet and affiliate with all types.

Anyways, heres an update for all of those who care.

My engineer brother made an extractor sleeve for me, worked perfect! Soaked the bolt for a few days with PD blaster, put in the center drill sleeve, drilled it, put in the extractor and it came out, YESSSSSS!

In the midsts of my rebuild, I went on my honeymoon to the Riviera Maya, dropped my head off at the machinists and took off to da beach. Picture from my resort for you all to enjoy!

Got back and went to pick the head up, guy tells me its cracked.......WTF. I took it for another evaluation, come to find that the intake valves are all bent slightly, doh, must have been from previous owner slipping the belt at least once. SO, new valves and new valve seals in. Needless to say, first guy will not get ANY other business from me ever again. Other guys however will get all my business, they do amazing work!

Rebuild the turbo from ebay kit, parts were not perfect, should have known better..... anyways, use some old parts, some new parts and make it work. Installed a gauge and IPD gauge pod (also installed the HD blow off valve kit (10-14psi spring) and the HD TCV module. Fun go faster parts! On a side note, the Gauge that IPD sells is a vacuum PSI turbo guage, and that is how they have directions to hook it up. I bought a regualr turbo gauge that works on pressure. I tapped into the turbo housing line that is fed into the TCV to get my reading. Its cool to watch the needle move when the turbo kicks in, and boys does it. The upgraded TCV works wonders on the S (sport) setting! Combined with the HD blow off spring, I get to about 14 PSI now before it dumps off. Stock is 8. I can feel the difference. Havent laid into it to hard yet because of the fresh rebuild and all.

Got it all back together the other night, do a final oil flush and shes now purring like a kitten. One small issue was an oil leak from turbo oil drain tube, the fel pro kit does not supply a new one. I RTV'd it! day after the rebuild and perfectness, the crank position sensor goes bad........ugh.

Gunna run it for about 100 or so miles and them put in some quality synthetic oil and call it a job well done. NOW, to fix the rear door locks, order a new rear drive shaft and fuel gauge! I can't give up on Gus, (got the name from Breaking Bad) its way to cool of a car!

Quick update, if anyone cares. Hahah

The oil return line from the turbo, I had used the old gasket (I know, very dumb) and it failed. I was leaking oil BAD. I took it off (VERY VERY difficult on an AWD car) from underneath to find that it was just half a gasket, no wonder why I was spewing so much oil! Anyways, replaced it with a new gasket and no leaks! Car is running top notch now and it cool to watch the turbo gauge do its thing.
