Unhappy Starting problems

Hi, i have a 1999 volvo v70 2.0L estate, which has has now produced a starting problem...when i turn the key, the engine turns over, it wants to start, seems to start, but then dies, it can take quite a few times to get it to start and sometimes starts straight away, but when it is running, it runs fine. Could it be a fuel problem or electrical? I have tried to research on the net, but sounds like it could be a number of things Fuel pump, ignition coil, fuel pressure regulator etc...i dont think its distributer cap or rotor arm as i presume it would stall if it wasnt getting a spark during driving...any ideas please as i am rather confused, many thanks, Nicholas.

Also could be your air mass meter. I had the same issue on my '98 just recently and that was the cause.

Hi, thanks for that...the problem has been on and off for the past month...i get a week of it playing up then a week of it starting every time, first time, with me thinking...yes somehow its sorted...NOT...I put in some BG44K fuel cleaner about 10 days ago and a few days after it ran fine, so i got to thinking it was a fuel blockage problem or similar and that this stuff had sorted it, but obviously not... i will try cleaning the air mass meter and see what that does...thanks.

check fuel pressure both while running as well as after its shut down. You should be looking for around 43 psi while running. if lower than 35psi then you may want to look in to replacing the pump.
You can also check the FPR. Put a handheld vacuum pump on it pull about 20hg see if it holds it. Check if you can smell fuel anywhere around the FPR.

Fuel pump relay problems are common, how old is that part?
