difference between a 2000 transfer case and a 2001
I have a 2000 volvo v70xc. The transfer case went out and I have been running on Fwd for a few months now. I found a transfer case on craigslist and purchased it. turns out the dip tard had the year wrong. The used one I just bought is a 2001. At the time I did not know as the old one was in the car still. I only found out once I pulled the bad one out and sat it side by side with my newly acquired used one. I did some research and I have come up with 2 conclusions.
1: the transfer cases or angle drive or bevel gear as some call it can NOT be repaired or rebuilt. Is this true?
2nd: the 2001 one transfer case will NOT work int he 2000. Is this true and if so can i please have a reason. Is it geared different? Will it not fit? clearance issues? what is it that makes it not cross compatible?
Thanks in advance.

1. The parts are not available separately from Volvo.
2. No, not as far as I know. Off the top of my head, the prop shaft flange is different. I think one is longer. I'm also not even sure it will physically fit. Never tried it though, I only install correct parts. You've already got it out. Try it and see.
