The square box, just behind the oil drain plug. What's in there?



This is not my car, just a pic I grabbed off the web. I've got a '98 that the previous owner obviously hit something with, and that plate that bolts on there is bent. How worried should I be? I don't want to take it off until I know what I'm getting into.

weird - looks home made. There's an oscillation damper on the bottom of the XC's angle gear (per the diagram on volvopartswarehouse.com ) but it doesn't show the bottom looking like that!
