How big of a project is dropping the sump pan? I did some research and it looks like a huge PITA project. Are we talking a few hours, or a weekend? Also, the info I saw used a special jack to hold the engine from the topside. If that's the case, I have no idea where to procure something like that (rent?).

I'm about to drop the oil pan on my 2.4 '05 V70. From what I can tell, it's not a huge job, aside from the usual work. Just a lot of bolts holding it on (30) and the need to use the special Volvo gasket maker material ($$ for a tube you will only use once probably). Did you try the glove test on your oil fill cap? The clogged oil sump tube can cause too much vacuum, which can make the system whistle. Also, there is a diaphragm on the PCV breather box which can break and cause it. Saw that on a youtube video. HTH
