2005 V70 shuts off while driving?
Hello fellows-
Help me if you can with where to start on my car. I have an 05 V70 that has been running fine. I have had it 2 years- no issues. Today, my son was using it and it shut off while he was driving. He was arriving at his destination so he let it sit for a while. When he started back home...it shut off 5 more times on the hiway. Each time he was able to stop- put it in park- turn the key, and it started right back up.
It runs fine....but today it shut down 6 times.
What could be the issue?
Thank you

Well- the phantom returns.
Had this issue repaired about 2 years ago- cost turned out $1235. Looking at paperwork- it appears they replaced everything dealing with the pvc?
This past week I have had this issue 2 times now. ........ driving fine and then the engine shuts down while driving. I'm wondering if there could be water/ trash in the gasoline???

If you're in the USA the ethanol in our gas precludes the chance of water (and therefore much chance of gunk) being in your tank.
Your car still has a separate fuel filter. Changing it is the perennial first step.
Cleaning the MAF (with MAF cleaner spray-allow to dry) is also super basic and you might get lucky.
Cleaning the ETM (throttle body) is another thing any people can do.
Read your fuel pressure. It's a basic test most shops and do-it-yourselfers can perform.
Have your car read at a dealer using their VIDA/DICE.

Unless you went to a "real bad" gas station I wouldn't suspect fuel is your problem. I've run 90/10 gas in three V70's over 15 years now.
Did you mention the fuel filter to your mechanic? A new one might allow some performance improvement if the old one was clogged.
Do get back to us. Is your shop a foreign car specialist? Do they know Volvos?

Okay- supposed to get my car back today? (2005 V-70 shutting down while driving)
We'll see?- their diagnosis said fuel pressure sensor regulator. Once I get the paperwork I'll post what all they did.
Cost estimate ~ $650. (I had some extra work done to drivers door too-window would not go up or down)

Update: When, when I got home I noticed a buzzing sound. Couldn't hear it while driving- radio was on also. But bottom line- i thought it was fuel pump- sound actually coming from fuel tank!. So- got it back to shop today and they said it is the fuel pump. I had to leave it with them- waiting on a rack to put it on.
Don't have a diagnoses yet or a price to repair. Hope its not bad?

Had a similar problem but on my stepsons BMW 525TDS, shut off when driving, turned out to be the big bunch of keys hanging off the ignition key, constant swing affected the lock and wore it so that it eventually cut out from time to time, I remember one of the big Japanese bike makers had that problem too and actually issued a service bulletin on it, but that was over half a century ago, in my youth.
If it is the fuel reg, I had that on my performance VW air-cooled, I fitted an after market regulator, (with a gauge), end of problem for under $60

Update 2: finally got a call from shop Wednesday eve. They say fuel pump is definitely bad- replacement will be right at $1000.
Sad part here is I had just had it in the shop to repair cause of it shutting down while driving- think is was $623?- when I got it back the fuel pump was making a racket- wonder what caused that? So now this last trip will wind up costing me a total of $1623........ I think they screwed up.
Not going back to that shop. Might be time to start looking for another ride?

Update #3......crapola!!! V70 still shutting down on me. last post on this was in July. Well I finally found another shop- put the car in back in Oct. They kept it for just over 2 weeks....finally diagnosed some wrong parts from last shop repair. They changed out fps and replaced a coil? looks like "2# ion coil"?....Cost $585. I have had it back near 2 months now- no issues. I think its finally fixed. Thank God.
