Default 2008 V70 Oil leak at timing cover

I bought a 2008 V70 with 75k on it. Had a few minor issues but after a month I started seeing oil drops under car. I took it in to mechanic and he said it was the vacuum pump and replaced it. After that the leaks went from dime sized to pancake size. He looked at it again and said it was coming from the timing cover and tried to seal it with heavy duty sealant which did not work. To replace seal it is over $1800 and he said I should go ahead and change timing chain and tensioner since it would be easier to do it while cover off. In the meantime I bought a new PCV unit as I had read that a faulty one can cause oil leaks. Been to cold to put it in but does any one have similar experience or suggestions?
