Default A/C Works & Then Suddenly the Heat Turns On?

Hello,

I just bought a 2001 V70 XC on Friday. Everything appeared in good order. Friday night, I noticed the A/C was working fine and after driving it for a time, the air coming out was sort of lukewarm. After five minutes or so, it seemed like the heat was on, although I had not changed a thing. All settings were the same. Saturday the A/C seemed fine. Yesterday, the A/C worked great. After driving for 20 minutes, the same thing happened, sort of lukewarm air and then it felt like it was 100 degrees in the car. Although the air coming out of the vents was sort of cool, the inside of the car, especially by my feet, was downright hot. I had to put the windows down. When I pulled in the driveway, antifreeze started pouring down the driveway. Any ideas of what could be the problem? I am thinking the thermostat? No messages appeared.

Also, I don't know if this could be related, the left turn signal seems to have an intermittent problem: it blinks quickly, and I get the message there is a bulb problem, and then suddenly the blinker works normally. My boyfriend pulled it out and just reset it and it hasn't happened since. Just worried about an electrical problem...

Any suggestions appreciated! :-)

First, fix the cooling system problem. Is the engine overheating, or is the radiator cap defective, or is there a leak? Are the radiator cooling fans coming on?

If the engine is overheating, it can negatively affect the A/C performance...drastically. Aside from that, a couple things to check. First, is the A/C compressor running when you get the warm/hot cabin temperature? If not, need to troubleshoot that problem. If the compressor is running, possibly the heater control valve isn't closing properly. When that happens, the heater core remains hot and all the cool air from the evaporator gets re-heated as it blows by the hot heater core. If all that stuff checks out, need to put a set of gauges on the low and high side service ports to further evaluate the A/C.
