Default Cleaning Throttle Body V70 non-turbo

I'm replacing the PCV system and notice that the throttle body is quite dirty, particularly on the back (engine) side. Are there any tips/tricks to cleaning it? I have read that you HAVE to use throttle body cleaner and to be gentle as to not damage the part as it's very expensive to replace.

Any comments are much appreciated. Here are pictures of what mine looks like.

You don't HAVE to use throttle body cleaner, TB cleaner is easy to suggest as a spray cleaner as it can be found almost anywhere. Have gas and a small tooth brush that works to. This type of slime cleans right up. This is more of an oily residue then it is a carbon.

Don't spray anything in there.

Spray a rag with whatever you want to use to clean it (carb cleaner works fine) and wipe until clean.

Thanks for the tip. Is it ok to move the throttle plate back and forth manually when cleaning it? It seems pretty tight and with how expensive the part it, I don't want to mess it up.

Yep, you have to to get it fully clean.

Used throttle body cleaner and a few paper towels. wetted the towels down and got in there and it cleaned up quite nice. I did spray a tiny about into the throttle body to clean a few hard to reach places. Used low psi air to blow everything out before reinstalling with new gasket to 150 in-lbs (17Nm).
