Default Engine rebuild - cylinder head timing - valve positions

Hello all

I have a D5244T2 which I bought a secound hand cylinder head for. I assumed all the valves would be closed ready for install but some were open. I had taken reference photos of the old head (lobe/sprocket positions) with all the valves closed. When I rotated the timing sprocket of the new head by hand until these positions were the same not all the valves are closed. I know the position of the pistons when the valves are closed so I thought if I made note of what valves opened when I could see when cylinder 1 is at TDC and go from there but at no point are all the valves closed.
I need help timing the cylinder head, am I missing something obvious maybe when the rotating the sprocket I am not rotating it at small enough increments? I trying to be as smooth as possible but there does not seem to be a point where all the valves are closed. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

I trust you have this cam/timing belt alignment info - if not here it is.

Yes I do, when I removed the old head I used the timing marks and all the valves were closed. The new cylinder head is on a stand, I need the valves to be closed before reassembly. Are there timing specs for the cams, like sprocket positions?

That's in the picture above, or are you asking how the two cam gears align? The cams have to come out to put the head on - so not sure what you are asking.

That is what I was looking for thank you, I did not know there was a secound photo, maybe because I am using a phone? I thought to remove the cams, all the valves should be closed so there is no pressure on any springs. I aligned the marks, cylinder 4 and 5 have valves open would of thought the valves would be closed. I will removed the cams with these instructions, thanks again. Where did you find this information? I couldn’t find online repair instructions

Vida, the factory manual - I trust you are using new head bolts - they are torque to yield and stretch when tightened.

Much appreciated. Yeah of course, buying from a Volvo dealer, only a few pounds less than what I found online. Thanks for the help
