Gas Gauge Isn't Working
Hi Volvo Friends!
I just purchased a 2009 V70. When I bought it the gas gauge showed a little under a quarter of a tank. Then I filled up the tank. It sometimes says that same amount of gas on the gauge and other times it says ---- miles to empty. I have checked the fuses I see that are related to the gas or fuel and all are good. Any other people have the same issue or have an idea what it could be?
Thanks in advance!
Heather

Are you saying the , "--- miles to empty" message is displayed in the same window as the fuel level? just asking....
Sender units can go bad. Baffles in tanks can break loose and impede the sender.
Once a poster on a board claimed his fuel gauge problems disappeared after adding a PEA fuel additive (like Techron concentrate) but that sounded a little too magic.
If nothing else, learn where your tank's access port is and inspect the connections. I don't think just running out and buying a sender unit is the first thing you want to do.
Just for fun, go ask at a Volvo dealership if fuel gauges are a common weak spot in your era car. It's unlikely that they'd offer an estimate to fix it.
Me? I've experienced only two bad fuel gauges in my automotive life and I quickly adapted to doing mileage math. Use 1/4 tank as your new "empty" while you feel out your options.
