Default Fuel Gauge Question

I bought a used 2004 S60and have been having an intermittant problem with the fuel gauge. The car has been to the dealer three times and they have yet to fix whatever the cause may be. When the tank is on the full side of a half tank, the gauge seems to be working fine. As soon as it falls below half, the gauge moves all over the place each time I start the vehicle. For example, I will leave for work (which is only a mile from home) with a litlle under a half tank then when I leave work to come home, the gauge will read empty and the light will come on. I can start the vehicle a short period of time after I park it and it will read just under a half tank again. My Volvo dealership has replaced a bad seal in the gas fill but it has not fixed the problem. They are scratching their heads and so am I. I generally don't run my tank on empty and for an additional precaution I watch my mileage but I am looking for any suggestions/solutions to ensure that I won't be stuck on the side of the road out of gas one of these days.
