Default How do I know which (if) bearing is knackered?

Hi Guys,
I have a 2005 2.5T AWD V70 - which on the whole I'm really happy with.

However...............
Recently I've started hearing a noise, that seems to be coming from the rear of the car, that sounds like a wheel bearing - it's gets louder as you go faster and has that characteristic winding up noise with speed.
I had the wheels off yesterday (to put the summer tyres back on) and there was seemingly no play in the rear hubs, the drive shafts didn't seem to have any rotational play in them.

I've also noticed that as I drive around if I turn to the left (meaning the left side of the car compresses the suspension) the noise stops where as if I turn to the right (compressing the right side of the car) the noise gets worse.
I also checked the brakes - they looked fine as well.

Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be or what I could look at?

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

Sounds like your right bearing. When you unload it by turning left it quiets.

I have no familiarity with the rear axles. When you disassemble, roll the bearing and feel for roughness and inspect the axle.

it is as you think, bearing.
I isolated mine by drenching the culprit with penetrant front and back, that made it go quiet for a few minutes before the drone came back.
I drove it that way for thousands of miles, it gets worse but takes time.
The bearing in my 04 is integral with the hub, it would not come off the knuckle no matter what I hit it with. Torched it, no change.
Finally pulled the ebrake cable out completely and used that hole to insert a 1/2 inch x 14 inch extension and drove it off from behind the knuckle, used the ext as a punch and hit it with a 4 lb short handle hammer of thor. Yours may or may not come off easy but if all else fails this will absolutely remove it.

Far as I could see there is no difference in the part from right to left side, it looks perfectly symmetrical, so buying the wrong part probably isn't an issue.
If you get it from FCP they will swap it if theres a difference and you ordered the wrong one, as long as the box looks good and you don't make a mess of the part.
