No not me whining, but I think the transmission...

There is a whining noise at speed - anything over 30mph ish, more noticable at 50-60. It comes from the front, and seems to be transmission (its an auto), but could be bearings.
Its done 120k, and just had new tyres on all round. Any ideas or relevant history ?

May be described as more of a grinding noise too...

Does the noise chane when you turn the steering wheel at hiway speeds?

 

sort of, but not by much. A bit of a 'howl' now, though not too loud.

 

Maybe more explanation...

A groaning/cyclical whine/moaning noise. Yes worse turning left but definitely evident straight ahead.
Local Volvo specialist quotes £150 for each bearing/hub, and assumes is a wheel bearing. Local garage not sure of cause fully, but now definitely worse since doing 500 miles in one day.

Main concern is - is it the gearbox instead, and can garage be sure that its a bearing.

 

Does the noise correspond to engine rpm or vehicle speed? If it is vehicle speed it is most likely a hub bearing. A competent shop should have a tool like a chassis ear which can help isolate the noise while driving.

 

I know thisthread is forever old... but I think my car is doing the same thing... what was the resolution?
