I bought an 07 V70 2.5T with one valet key and one non working remote with a flip key(the key part worked). I figured I'd be out several hundred for two new remotes and a new flip key.


Took the car to the dealer today, they tried programming two new remotes. The programing wouldn't take. They tried updating the programing on the CEM(for a fee of course). That didn't help either. Techs said they've never seen it and are stumped. Their next plan was to call Volvo of America's engineers, but they would need the car overnight and I needed to get home with my screaming 14mo old so we called a truce for the night.


Before I go shell out several hundred more, any ideas on what modules all work with the CEM that could affect the remotes? Ideas of typical failures?


If it matters the only other thing that seems to be wrong right now is that the rear park assist has an error that I have yet to trouble shoot (either a module or sensor from what I gather). They did reset the module that controls the one touch up function on the passenger side window and that reset worked fine.

 

Wow that is very bizarre...how were they able to confirm that the programming did not "take?" I wonder if the signal receiver unit in the car might be shot, wherever it is...


Put differently, is it possible that they keys have in fact been programmed successfully but whatever piece of hardware is supposed to receive signals from the remotes is shot (or was replaced from a doner car for whatever reason).


These are shots in the dark (in case you have not figured that out already).

What they told me was that they tried three times with two different brand new remotes and every time it would get to a certain point in the upload of the software and just stop (not really sure if there was an error message or it just stopped).


I do think you're right that some module in the car is bad, the question is just which one. I bought a copy of VIDA with some wiring diagrams, but haven't had a chance to get it setup correctly on my computer.


I now know a lot more about the CEM after doing some reading last night, but I don't know how many other modules deal with the remote system and could be causing the problem. One of them is either bad or needs to be reprogrammed. I have no idea and apparently neither do the techs!


Mostly I'm trying to get an idea how much money I might be spending to chase this before I give them the car and the time clock start ticking.

 

So I was out for a run and a thought popped in my head. The salesperson who sold me the car (independent dealer) was babbling on and mentioned that they had replaced the rear view mirror (which apparently is also called the upper electronics module=UEM).


Pretty well knowing the answer I called the sales guy up, and they said they got the UEM from Volvo and installed it themselves. So my guess is that the UEM is blank--does anybody know if this would be causing the issue? I haven't had a chance to run this by the dealer yet, but it seems like a pretty good shot.

 

Yes it could. That is what receives the remote signal. The UEM needs a software download to work with the car.

When I bought my car, the rearview mirror was broken but I didn't worry about it. Hey, it's mirror, how complicated can that be, right? Har!

I found out that junkyard mirrors probably wouldn't work because they needed to be "programmed" to the car. WTF? However, I am a handy, fix-it guy so I bought the junkyard mirror, took the self darkening glass out of it and installed it into my mirror. I think that I had one connection to solder.
