My mother-in-law's 2002 V70 is throwing a P0442 code. I understand the most likely cause is a bad J-hose. I've called several auto parts stores here and none of them carry a hose specifically for this application, but several offered to "match it up." How critical is it to get a hose specifically for this application? From the pictures I've seen online the bend in the hose doesn't look too severe to me, such that it would have to be necessarily molded to that shape.

The J-hose is the most likely culprit for code P0442. You may want to inspect the hose first and patch the crack before you replace it. The code will go away after ODB has gone through self checks (several trips).

On my 2001 V70 the hose was (is) cracked at the clamp to the charcoal canister. You cannot see it but feel it. However I was able to get my phone in there to take the pictures below. I patched it last week with silicone and the code cleared. Other possibilities are the gas tank filler cap seal.
