Default Strange odor in 2001 V70 SW

Greetings!

I have acquired a 2001 V70 station wagon with 170,000 miles. The car has an nasty old sneaker odor about it that I was hoping someone could help me resolve.

My first thought was that the in-cabin filter needs to me changed. While I've found plenty of hits on "Volvo 2001 in-cabin filter", I can't seem to find the filter on this car in neither under the glove box nor in the engine bay under the wiper on the passenger side.

Were in-cabin filters an option on the S70 wagon back in '01? This car is not by any means loaded with options - no CD player, .

So thanks to anyone who can help git rid of the stink because it's like driving around in a dirty clothes hamper.

I had a 2001 V70 T5 car that my wife would not ride in. She said it smelled bad. It didn't really bother me much but she would not go in it without complaining.

Finally found a crack in the plastic ring at the top of the fuel pump. Fuel leaked out and evaporated leaving a heavy oil-like residue. Odor didn't smell like gas - my wife said it smelled like a dumpy old car that burned oil.

Fuel pump is under rear seat, passenger side. This was a common problem. Some cars were recalled for the problem. You might want to check it out.

if you have the factory mats try lifting them up and smelling them, mine smell like crayons, at least I think they do. I left them outside for about two days and it got ride of the smell.
