Hi,

I went to change the fuel filter on my 2004 V70 yesterday and it was nowhere to be found based on the Haynes manual pictures (or common sense) indicating it was near the fuel tank on the pasenger side. So searching around the various forums I found some references to it being in the fuel tank (and hence unserviceable) or even in some 3rd potential location.

Does anybody know for sure how I can find out where it is? I have 120K on this baby and I doubt the filter has ever been changed so before I throw in the towel I'd like to know for sure.

Thanks for the reply but No, the point of my thread is that the fuel filter is NOT under the vehicle in front of the rear passenger wheel where it is for most of the '04 V70s. It is somewhere else. Most things I've read point to the fuel tank as the location, but others say it is accessible from the hatch - I just want to know for sure. The one thing I DO know is it's not where it normally is on every other car I've owned.

 

I have a 2004 V70 (engine B5244S) and the fuel filter is also NOT located in front of the rear passenger side wheel. My Haynes manual say that's where it is - but it isn't. I've tried to trace the lines under the vehicle to all the way up front, but I can't find it.

Any clues?

Okay - I did some more searching around. According to this forum linked below - If you've got the steel fuel tank it will be located in the tank, only accessible by removing the fuel pump. Otherwise, it should be located just ahead of the right rear wheel, bolted to the underbody.

My car has the steel fuel tank and it matches the engine type listed in this forum, but mine has an additional S (B5244 + S).

My '99 and '02 V70, both B5244S engines, had the fuel filter forward of the RR wheel. I changed them by feel.
My '07 with the same engine has the steel tank and no external filter visible. I assumed the steel tank debuted in the 2007 model year.
The filter in the tank appears to be a foot long and likely will never need changing.

My question is: Why are steel tanks interspersed in a product line dominated by FRP tanks?
Is it to smooth out supply lines? Keep the steel tank production line open? Is the supply of FRP tanks limited such that alternatives are necessary?

Also, since designations like 'T3" and "T5" follow the B5244 in turbo models, you gotta conclude the S means something like "standard".

 

I've had the same problem with locating the fuel filter in my XC60. Unserviceable Fuel filter? Seems like an oxymoron. But, when I went to a parts dealer to ask them, I was told it was an "Unserviceable part", and likely in the fuel tank. Swell. Guess I'll stick with brakes, oil, etc.
