Default 08 3.1L 6 or 05-07 2.4L T5?

So, my son is in grad school at Dartmouth in New Hampshire (yeah... a little bragging there....) and he's thinking of buying a Volvo XC70. Went to visit him this weekend, reserved a Focus thru Dollar Rent a Car and they handed us the keys to a 2014 S60 T5! So.... now I want a Volvo, too.

That aside.... we test drove an 08 XC70, with the straight 6, 127k miles, at the Hanover dealership. He loved the car. So now, the real research can begin..... I know the engine went to the 6 cylinder in 08, which would be right at the top of his budget, and would likely be, like the one we drove, a higher mileage 100k to 130k car. (They wanted $12,990 asking, but were super pushy.... not the way I like to buy a car... I guessed we could have gotten it for $10k to $11k).

I've also seen that the tranny system problems of the 01 - 03 seem to have cleared up by the 05-07 era... is that true?

If so, what's a better option.... the 05 - 07 5 cylinder turbo, with lower miles or the Straight 6 in 08 with more miles? Are the turbos to be of big concern? I know with Audis and Beemers, they seem guaranteed to fail between 100k and 200k and will be thousands. Does the same hold true here? Are Volvo Turbos better?

AND.... surprisingly, the dealership couldn't answer this question... is the 6 cylinder a timing belt or chain engine? What about the T5?

Would appreciate any other advice or items to watch out for. Yes....he does want the AWD, and the wagon. He will likely drive the car for around 4 years and 60k miles plus. Thanks for your help and thoughts.... For me, I'm going to start looking for an early 2000's S60 five speed... I think.

I would go with the 5 cylinder.

The 6 is a timing chain. The T5 is a belt due at 120k.
