Default 2009 XC70 Bent Crossmember/Subframe/Engine Cradle

I recently purchased a 2009 XC70 at auction. It had sustained a side impact that pushed the left side wheel in snapping the steering knuckle where it holds the tie rod. I purchased a new knuckle and started to replace it when I discovered that the subframe is pushed in and up about 3/4 of an inch where the control arm connects. I called a local shop and they quoted me $3,500 just for the labor to replace the subframe. I found a used one for $500. My question is, how difficult is it to replace? Also, should I have a frame shop attempt to bend in back into place?

$3500 in labor is WAY out of line. Are you sure they knew what you were talking about?

Yes, I explained it in detail. They understood what I was talking about but said the hours weren't listed for the job in their manual so they would need to call me back. They are a really busy shop and I think they just didn't want to mess with it. I only know of one other mechanic in the area who works on Volvos, so I think I'll give him a ring and see what he says.

The other shop quoted me $400! I think we have a winner!

Much more reasonable. It only takes a couple hours if you've never done one.

I called the first shop back to clarify the estimate. They claimed that the engine and tranny had to be lowered down and reattached to the new subframe, then lifted back into place. I argued with them for a few minutes then gave up. It's a place called Autometrics and is the only foreign car shop in town.

That isn't the case at all. The engine and transmission are held in from above while replacing the subframe.
