Advice on potential Volvo purchase - 2006 XC70 or 2005 V50
This is my first post - I'm on the verge of joining the Volvo ranks - and I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on a vehicle I'm considering.
First, this:
Used 2006 Volvo XC70 for Sale in Revere/Boston MA 02151 1A Auto Way
I drove it today and it felt pretty good. Transmission felt smooth and I didn't notice any turbo lag. Interior was clean and had all the ***** and nothing broken. The dealer doesn't have any service records but the timing belt was done at (I think) 110K (I read it on the engine). The only thing is that the AC doesn't work, but the guy said it probably just needed charging.
When I asked about taking it to my mech, the guy said that the dealership owner would only let me take it to an actual Volvo shop. I picked a shop and he said it would be fine. I had never heard of this, and when I asked my mech, he hadn't either. Is that weird?
More to the point, assuming everything works out with the used car check, does this seem like a fair price?
Second, this 2005 V50:

Thanks in advance for your help!

1st one, $12k is really expensive for a 9 years old car (2006 model sold in 2005) even with that miles. The A/C could be either a hard to fix known electrical issue (check every other electrical switches work on the central panel), either the compressor needs replacing ($$). They don't usually need recharging, I don't believe what the guy says, if it's that simple, why isn't he doing it before selling it?
The 2nd is a much better deal, especially given the low miles. The wheel bearing and the brakes will be around $600 at a smaller garage. Make sure the transmission shifts smoothly especially when warm, and again, make sure there there are no electrical issues (Volvo's are sensitive to those and sometimes hard to diagnose). Needs a timing belt kit at $400 (no water pump)
