2008 xc70. Had the usual “starter just clicks with the different messages popping up.” I started by checking the battery terminal which was good. Then I went to check the starter. The solenoid cracked and came apart. Great! I found the problem I thought. Replaced the starter and battery just to be safe. The next day after a testdrive my wife calls me saying the car was making a horrible racket and there was a terrible smell in the car. She pulled over on a Walgreens lot and turned the car off. The car continued to run very rough like it was Dieseling. After a solid minute it finally stopped. I drove over to see what was happening and smelled what was similar to brakes burning. I removed the starter and it was literally rattling inside. I got another new starter and replaced everything. Now we’re back to the clicking sound. I tried the lock and unlock trick. Tried shifting back and forth to nuteral. nothing. Even left the battery disconnected for the night.
any ideas?
