Default Full Size Spare Question

04 XC70
I want to replace the temporary spare with at full size spare. I did search the forum and there were several posts but seemed unclear whether they fit in the wheel wheel well or not. Just wondering if anyone has doe it.

My tires are 215 /65 R16. I'm guessing the 215 will fit since I tried a spare 205 (shorter tire) and there was at least 1.5" space all around. Short of removing one of the tires and trying it which I'm not enthused about doing right now.

Thanks

215 mm is roughly 8 1/2 inches so you should be able to measure the depth of the spare tire well and use that as a guide. There isn't much width different between a 205 and a 215 (the numbers refer to treat width in mm's) but many compact spares are really small ie 125mm so you'd need 3 1/2 inches more vs the donut. that said, if your 205 fits you should be good to go. Also check to see if there's any foam block spacers etc under the flooring that covers the tire. You may be able to trim that if you need a bit more room.

Yes, it will fit. That's where the flat tire goes after you change the spare.

Default donut size

I don't have an answer to your question although I see that the two replies that you have so far, seem to think it would fit.

But I do have a question.... what is the proper size of a donut? I just took a 2006 V70 off of my son's hands and realize that it has no spare and I was going to pick up a donut for it. My tires are 215/55 R16.

Yes I used to travel with a 5th regular wheel and tire. Fits fine. the plastic tray no longer fits on top - Had a 3rd seat in one of my cars and a full size tire and wheel fits under that also.

Default I dont think it fits

Not sure how you guys did it but I went to Discount Tire today and asked if we can try fitting in the 215 65 16. They brought one out. Just the tire, no rim. I had a tough time getting it in the well. The tire was pegged all around. They said that once you put a rim in it and pump it with air it would not fit because the air will make it bulge slightly and with a rim on the tire would be rigid and difficult to maneuver into the well. I think I agree with them.

For those who say they were able to get the tire in are we talking the same size tire? Got any pics?

But I think I will jack up the car and pull out one of the tires tomorrow and try it again.

So the verdict is it will fit. Like someone said you just will not be able to put back the black tray as there will be no room for it.

I removed one of the wheels to use to test if it will fit into the spare wheel well. I also peeled off the 2 black hard foam pads glued towards the backside of the wheel well. Carefully placed the regular wheel into the well. Takes a little wiggling around bit eventually drops in. I glued 1/2"x12"x20" bubble wrap where the hard foam was. Also popped both trunk floor boards to open up the top side. See pics:

Remove foam pads

I put bubble wrap. A thin flat hard foam would work too.
