Im a new owner and looking for info
Hey Guys I just purchased an 02 XC70 with about 103K on the clock. It runs and drives good. But usually when I buy a new car I have a ritual I go through to get it ready for the amount of driving I do. I am a field Technician here in Jersey and for me to do 300 Miles in a day is not unheard of.
I've only ever owned US cars, the owners manuals usually call for 87 octane, even my 99 mustang manual said 87. This manual calls for 93. Any thoughts on that?
Also all of the cars I drove when making my decision, I noticed 2 things all of them have some form of clicking sound in the top of the engine. After the first 3. I decided this is normal in the 2.4 Turbo. Generally I would assume the valves or lifters were making the noise? Second thing is the absense of trans dipstick? usually I like to completely drain and refill the trans and replace the gasket and filter. Also inspect/replace if necessary the Valve body and seals. I already know the bolt on top of the trans is not the fill port. I have read of others loosing 3rd gear after a mechanic used that bolt to refill the trans.
Finally I usually replace all filters fuel, air, oil, and cabin, and new accessory belt. Start new with synth oil. I usually run a can of seafoam in the brake booster to burn the carbon out of the intake. Then a can in the tank with a fill up to run through the rest of the fuel system. Although it looks like the injectors and rail have been replaced. Finally I do plugs wires and coils. What are the components of the ignition? and what brands do you guys suggest?
Thanks in advance, I love this car already and have not even put 50 Miles on it yet.

Hi and welcome to VolvoForums.
These I5's do have a light clicking noise that you can hear with the hood open, every once in a while they click a little louder on real cold starts (when the car has not been started in a few days). Usually it's the lifters but the injectors click a little as well.
The timing belt is likely due at 105,000. If that has not been done, take care of that with the rollers. You should also replace the PCV system.
The car has coil packs and plugs. It's best to stick with Volvo plugs no matter where you purchase them from. I would not change coil packs unless you start having problems with them. The good thing is that the price of the packs have come down a lot over the past few years.
Yes it's best to run 91+ octane. Many run 87 but I don't advise it. I believe it contributes to burnt valves. I run full synthetic in mine.
I wouldn't mess with any seals unless they start to leak. Cam seals and water pump should make it to 200,000 easy (as long as the PCV is kept up). I usually purchase parts from Volvo specialty places like the stealer, www.iPdUSA.com and/or www.FCPEuro.com.
Not sure about the tranny on the tranny. My car has a dip stick under the intake tube that doubles for the filler tube. Sad to say that the '01 and '02's have tranny issues in some of the cars. Hopefully you will miss that issue.
I doubt anyone replaced the fuel rail and injectors, maybe someone just cleaned the motor.
Again, welcome and do enjoy.

Yeah sorry about that 91 Octane.
So what type of tranny issues do these generally see? Ones that require rebuild? If I keep it clean and and lubricated properly Im hopping I miss that as well. I was figuring on about a 25K mile complete fluid and filter exchange. Not power flush but the old let it run and use 2 tubes to exchange the fluid till it comes clean. I believe there is a post on here outlining the process.
Were is a good place to get the BS stuff? Like I need 1 headlamp wiper arm and the rear window wiper arm. Im figuring Ebay.

Thank you for all the good information. A few more question. Valve body I have done twice before on an expedition and bronco. Also did shift Sel. on the expy. Wasn't too hard. How bad is the B4 Servo? does that require removing the trans?
If I could track down the Dealership that this car was usually serviced at Would they be able to pull and be willing to send me a copy of its records? I only ask because there is a chance the software was upgraded at some time. Oh also I found this

And
TCM upgrade. 2002 Volvo # 30677008
and This.
TCM upgrade. 2002 Volvo # 30774441 . Are these the upgrades. Can they be done at home?
I guess if I run a fluid change I will need to have the dealer reset the system for that anyway. I also planned a trip to the dealer for a cooling flush as I cant do them myself. For some reason the coolant smell makes me really nauseous and pounding headache. I think Im allergic to something in it. I get it on my hands or clothes and I imediately start to develop a rash.
So I got the headlight wiper arm from Ebay $30, I went to the dealer yesterday and got the 2 side directional indicators for the fenders. $55 a piece, and 2 wiper blades for the headlights $17. Looks like I will also need to get the rear blade from the dealer as well. Strange design considering the fronts are pretty standard. And it looks like my best bet for the rear wiper arm is ebay as well. Maybe Ill have time to take a trip to a u-pull scrap yard this week.

So after I posted this I googled the vin and it came up for sale in another part of the state. which I knew because the dealer I bought it from had it shipped down to his lot for me to look at. My wife had just bought a truck from him. So originally I had a vehicle report that was very basic information. Well when I went to the for sale listing that google returned. It had a link for a free car fax.
CARFAX Vehicle History Report for this 2002 VOLVO V70 AWD CROSS COUNTRY
Looks like my trans was rebuilt by AAMCO with 68K on the clock. Good? Bad?

You may consider the old saying "don't fix what ain't broke". Try not to worry about the tranny unless you have a problem with it.
You can get good parts pricing at www.iPdUSA.com and www.FCPEuro.com. Yes the junk yard is a good place for some parts if you don't mind going there often. I usually check their website for new inventory.
