New Owner 2006 XC70- fishy mechanic during inspection
Hi Everyone,
I purchased a low milage 2006 XC70 yesterday (under 40k miles). Before purchasing I got a Volvo multi point inspection from a dealer on Long Island, and all is good to go. Breaks and tires either at 8s or 7s, and everything else checked out on their inspection check list. This was on Friday (8/9). The wagon also came with full maintenance history from the dealer.
The car is driving great.
This morning (8/14) rather than making the 50 minute drive out to the dealer to get the New York State inspection I took the car to get inspected by a local mechanic. I figured it couldn't hurt because they aren't doing any repairs, and I'm planning to go out to Volvo for any maintenance anyways.
The mechanic calls me and says "I'm going to pass you, but did you get a warranty on the car? The breaks and rotors all need to be replaced."
It's my thinking that the mechanic was just trying to get some extra cash out of me...he had a quote ready and everything. When I told him I got the inspection done, he dropped the break pads and just started talking about the rotors.
Is there any reason I should second guess the Volvo Multi Point Inspection? I like the guys at the dealership, and if something needed done I would totally bring it back to them. According to the records the break pads were done about 5,000 miles ago miles ago.
Thoughts?

He is probably lying. Trust me, brakes pay well and are very easy. Every mechanic loves doing brakes. If it needed brakes, the dealer tech would NOT have missed it.
What exactly did he say was wrong with the rotors? Under minimum thickness? Did he provide measurements?
If the brakes were done 5000 miles ago, there's no way they need to be done already.

I agree...I figured the dealer would have wanted the business especially with an easy fix like breaks.
After I told the local mechanic that the Volvo Multi Point checked out he just kept saying the one rotor was really bad. Nothing about thickness or measurements.
The previous owner passed safety inspection at the Volvo Dealership in Mid July, and the Multi Point checked out fine at the beginning of August. I'll just take it back to the dealer if it starts to feel funny, but I think I'm in good shape.
