The 5 speed Aw50-55 transmission used in the 5 cyl volvos (until about 2007 for most cars) has a dipstick on the front of the transmission partially hidden by the lower radiator hose. The later 6,8 and some later 5 cyl cars used the 6 speed trans. On that, the "dipstick" is part of the oil drain plug. Take the center part out and if it leaks it's full, kind of like checking a manual transmission or differential fluid level. (those usually are fill plugs only, on the side of a diff, the Volvo 6 speed has a fill plug on top of the trans)

plus the 6 speed uses the drain plug to set the level. There's a dual plug on those where the center plug drains to the proper fill line (set when the trans fluid is 55C) and the outer plug removes the drain tube to do a full drain. fun fact - VW DSG transmissions use the same design (except you have to remove the battery to access the filter and fill port on the top...)
