Default 740 Turbo

I have a 87 740 turbo and the turbo is giving me problems. When you accelerate the turbo builds boost but doesn't release it into the engine. The guage goes up but never into the yellow (where it normally would go). Anyone know what this is caused by. Also is there a way to boost up the turbo a little. Thanks

I have a Turbo-760 and we can solve your problem!! First off, do you have any type of manual? If not I strongly recommend a Haynes Manual for your model year. Auto Zone and Advance Auto sell them for around $15. -$20 dollars.

In that manual it will detail how to trouble shoot, adjustand repair your Turbo. A few things to check:

-First off, is your Turbo plumbing (pipes and hoses) in tact and in GOOD shape? If you have ANY leaks in the pipes and hoses from the outlet of the turbo to the inlet of the throttle body, you will loose BOOST! Check the route carefully from start to finish! If it looks good, try this test:AUTOMATICS ONLY! Chock the front wheels. Set the emergency brake. Start the engine and run until it is at NORMAL temp. Have someone get in, step on the brakes, put it in drive and step on the gas slowley until you build up max boost. It will be around 3500-3800 RPM. This is known as POWER BRAKING! With the engine at this speed the boost will be(should be around 10-12 PSI. While it is at pressure look and listen for any leaks in the turbo plumbing! When you let off of the gas, you should hear blow off valve release any pressure. If there areany leaks you will hear and maybe see it. **NOTE** Only do this for short periods of time and no more than about 3-4 times. The transmission will get hot. After it cools off you can repeat if necessary.

If you have no leaks you may need to adjust the turbo waste gate linkage.

Before we get into that, please let me know how the other test turn out.
