Default breaker points AND electronic ignition

some of the older members may remember back when electronic ignion was new. I swear I remember a system that utilized the contact breaker points, but fired them with an electronic unit. what it did was remove the amp load and since the points only then acted to fire the electronic ignition, it meant hey wouldn't spark and thus didnt need adjusting so often.

the reason for asking is I have a 66 volvo 122 wiht a B18. it is completely stock.

I do not want ot change the coil or the distributor as theyare OEM.

I have an older aluminnum box , but no trigger for it, but it just has 4 wires and I have no other info about it, but I believe it to be avery early unit, probably an early upgrade from early 70's

DOes any other member remeber such a ssystem ,using points to fire the electronic igntion rather than replacing the points wiht a hall sensor? is this possible?

I did another 122 by using the black box and distributor from about a 72 140, but the distributor curve wasnt; correct. I did make it work well but it has an aluminum distributor, Id like to keep the old cast iron one.

is it possible to fire an electronic ignition module with points? can I use the OEM Coil? the coil in this car has a shieled wire so the switch and the coil are one unit, unles the cable is cut to separate them. It was made that way to prevent hot wiring.
my searches seem to come up wiht info on upgrading and removing the contact breaker points, a lot of the info suggests upgrading to a pertronics system.
