Default Check Engine Light is ON

1996 Volvo 960. 85K Miles.

The other day I tried to drive the car on a ramp, to replace the oil filter. While going up, the Transmission lights on "W" & "E" or "S" started to blink. The car wouldn't move. Reveresed the car few feets, and put back into "D" drive. This time it seemd to have fixed the problem and the blinking had disappeared. Now the "Check Engine" light comes on, few seconds after the car started.

My question is. Did the Transmission Sensor had gone caput on me, or the O2 Sensor. I have not hooked it up to a computer yet.

Appreciate any suugestions as to the most like cause of problem

Just a thought it could be just a loose connection causing the gear placement symbol on dash to change but this has caused the computer to register a fault thus now the check engine warning.

Welcome to my world....same car, same problem

I have the same problem over and over again...

I have replaced the PNP switch and the mode selector switch (W<S<E) switch, as well as the transmission controller and the problem still comes back every 6 months.

It usually happens when I am cruising at a low RPM in a higher gear...the car will shift down, then up and then the WSM lights blink and the arrow on the dash blinks and the check engine light comes on.

The errors I get are "mode selector switch voltage always high.

I am convinced that it will never be "fixed" and that I will just reset the check engine light every 6 months.

I hate this car...really want to get the Ross Converse V8 kit :-)

it is not your O2 sensor. that is realated to your exhaust and air/fuel ratio.

do you still have overdrive? does the arrow light stay on continually? my 740 the overdrive (OD) relay went out once just had to replace it.

but loose connection sounds good to me...

i would hook it up to a code machine and check out what the engine light means.

good luck to you two

I had the gear switch replaced, and seemd to have solved the roblem.
btw. I don't think the 96 960 model has over-drive provision.
