My new to me 1996 850 came with just one key. The person I bought it from said I could call the dealer and have a key made using the VIN number.
I haven't done that yet because I noticed the ignition switch is a little flaky. Once I start the car I have to turn the key backward just a little to get all the lights
working .
So I'm wondering can I replace the switch myself ? Also can I use the original key with the new switch ? The key doesn't have buttons, and I don't think there's a battery in it,
So I'm not sure if it has to be programmed in any way to work.
So should I go ahead and order the new Key and work on the switch later or do it all at once ?
A 1996 has a plain key, no chip, no programming needed (or possible)
Your need to move/turn the key to get accessories to work is a common problem with the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Have replaced hundreds to solve that problem. Example of switch needed below. Note sure if that's the correct part number but that's what it looks like and is very simple to replace. (if you own a screwdriver and some torx drivers)
