Smile Upgrade fuel injection on 1973 1800 ES

I recently purchased a 1973 1800 ES with the original Bosch fuel injection system. I would like to upgrade it to an improved system that is easier to maintain and delivers better performance.

Recommendations?

A couple of things off the top of my head to look at - check out Mega Squirt - a diy FI controlller system. Another alternative would be to install a carb manifold and then use a Weber TBI kit. Not sure how easy/reliable it would be to upgrade to another newer Bosch kit - even if you went with a KJET or something borrowed from 80/90s vintage Volvos, its still going to be a 30 year old system. Post up how you make out in your research. 4

You can also check out the various Dave Barton web pages - they may have something from some project cars etc.

Thanks for your response.

I'm not inclined to upgrade to a newer Bosch kit, given the 30-year-old issue. I think a carb system makes more sense for me, but I'm new to this so I'm looking for advice.

I checked out Davebarton.com and did not find anything.

So to start, I'd look at what carbs/manifolds were available on your engine. For example, on the similar vintage BMW 2002s they came with a downdraft Solex carb which were frequently replaced with a Weber 32/36 2bbl downdraft. Weber makes a bolt on throttle body FI to replace the 32/36 carbs. Similar solutions exist for cars that had dual side drafts - Again Solex/Webers were the standard for euro cars of that era and you can find a Weber TBI side draft kit as well.

Thanks for all the replies to my question. I ended up installing a Weber 32/36 with a manual choke, and it works great.
