Ethanol and old Bosch fuel injection systems
Keeping my 1981 245DL on the road was proving difficult. Its "Constant Pressure System" was failing despite all my efforts. Thanks to an earlier post on this forum, detailing replacing fuel injection with carburetor, I obtained two marine carburetor manifolds--one for downdraft, the other for sidedraft carburetors, I tried first a Holley downdraft carb which failed due to ethanol attacking its zinc body--according to carburetor forums.
Finally I found a Carter 684S cast iron body carburetor (downdraft) which so far works ok, far better than the replaced fuel injection system. My impression is that the original system couldn't handle ethanol fuel, creating problems regulating its internal pressures, resulting in erratic operation.
The biggest problem now is to remove all the wiring, most of which I replaced before, associated with the old FI system. Amazing how accessible the engine is now with the FI system removed. My impression is that cars over 25 years old, in many states, can be legally converted as I have done.
Manual choke and throttle hookup were simple. The Delco aftermarket fuel pump pulled fuel through both original disconnected fuel pumps and the stock FI fuel filter without problems, producing 6 lbs. at the carburetor.
