I've got a 2006 XC70 w/the HU-650 radio. It appears to amp out the tweeters separate from the bottom door speakers. I'd like to add a center channel (and install the factory center speaker) along with a sub-woofer. Is it possible to do it? I can't find the right components anywhere. Are the bottom door speakers full-range or is there a crossover limit? I'm thinking I could just sum these if they are full frequency.

I suppose it has to do with what you are doing specifically. Adding a center channel using a summed audio signal should not be a problem. The tweeter wires may be full range, crossover is probably just on the back of the speaker unless Volvo is adding Crossover components in their newer amplifiers.

 

I have a similar question about upgrading the sound of the installed hu-650. Is there any reasonably priced alternative to get improved sound? Can the speakers be upgrades without adding an amplifier or changing to the hu-850?

 

The speakers can be changed out by themselves and the rest of the factory setup remains the same. All depends on what you want to do, and budget. Perhaps an Infinity Basslink used to get you a little bit more low end. If you want more highs just add another pair of tweeters up front(hidden install so you do not have to see them). Keep it simple.
