new system
I just built a new system in my cavalier (I know...it's not a Volvo...sorry, I just like my Volvo friends better than my Chevy "acquaintances") that I'm very excited about and since I don't know anyone that gets as excited as I do about this stuff, i thought I'd post it here.
Here's the break down:
Pioneer DEH-P680P Premier head unit. Not the best, but it does push 6 volts through the RCA preamp outs instead of the typical 3.8. Plus, it has a built in 7 band EQ.
2 Pioneer two-way 6"x9" in the back
2 Pioneer three-way 6"x9" in the doors
2 Pioneer three-way 4"x6" in the dash concealed by a custom fiberglass speaker enclosure. (for those of you who know me....Fiberglass STILL sucks)
3 10" MTX Blue Thunder sub woofers
1 Pioneer 760 Watt class D amplifier
1 Pioneer 300 Watt class AB amplifier
1 Pyramid 200 Watt 12 band EQ (the paverbial thorn in my system's side....what can I say? It still works!)
a bunch of 4 Ga. power and grounding with a couple fuses in a Rockford Fosgate Power distributor block
Here’s the exciting part....I've been waiting for years to be able to afford the equipment necessary to test this system install and I have to say...BEST SYSTEM I'VE EVER BUILT. (but probably not the best system out there...)
The thing that sucked about all the other systems I've ever built (be it for me or for someone else) is that no matter what, if you hook sub woofers up to the sub woofer RCA out you miss some things. Visa versa, if you hook the subs up to the rear channel RCA out you miss stuff too. With this set-up…I miss nothing......and it's glorious.
Oh yeah! I forgot...I threw in one of those IP-BUS (Pioneer's verssion of the accessory in/CD changer in-put) addaptors with a head phone jack on the end in there too! Now I can use my mp3 player....which is a moot point I suppose since The DEH-P680P has the ability to play WMA, MP3 and MP4s on a burned disk. Maybe what's more exciting is that now I can plug in my cell phone and hear the conversation in thundering bass suround sound! :P

Well.....I gotta say. For a 1/2 DIN sized EQ, Pyramid does pretty good. I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole for anything competition grade and you're lucky to get more than two years use out of them but for the price....you just can't beat them. I paid $12 for mine on ebay.
because they fit and they're uber durrable. When you start adding more speakers than necessary to a channel the actual size and shape is irrelevant. You can slag 6x9's if you want to but I garuntee you that 4 of them in the same car will produce the same sound quality as 4 six inch or eight inch roundies.
If you're going with lagacy for the big dog...may as well stick with it. The Legacy LA290 is only a class A/B amplifier but it's super high efficiency and sitll advertises a 400 Watt RMS rating. Plus, it's Legacy...word
