Replacing the Deck in a 1996 850?
Hey,
My 1996 850 has a stock SC-811 installed. I have been thinking about about upgrading to a CD player/aftermarket radio basically since I owned the car (for 2 years). It has been one of those things I've been putting off and putting off. I figured out alternates for playing my iPod in my car including a cassette adapter, which was in use until last Saturday (ironically enough when I was an hour from home coming back from a road trip). The tape player just keeps flipping sides even though it is a one-sided adapter (and I've tried switching things around which leaves me to believe it is a problem with the deck and not the adapter as I tried another adapter).
I could use an FM transmitter except I cannot use my GPS if I go that route.
So that leaves me with the option of replacing the deck but as I have never replaced a car stereo before myself, let alone shopped for one before. My brother has some knowledge in the area though and I've helped him/he's shown me how to do it (so I do have some basic knowledge of what to do) but never in a Volvo. So question time:
1) Would you recommend a Single DIN or Double DIN deck (aka which is easier to install/would fit better)?
2) I am leaning towards an Alpine deck (I had one in my 240 and liked it, my bro swears by the brand, and other friends have spoken well about the brand). Any other brands I should check out and specifically models?
3) Where would be the best place to get accessories for installation? I checked down at my local Canadian Tire and they do not have much in the way of installation accessories for Volvo.
Ideally my budget is under $200. As for specific models of Alpine decks, the CDE-103BT and the CDT-125BT look to be promising (and I found places that they are on sale right now), though I do not know how useful Bluetooth would be for me seeing as I never talk on my phone and drive as it is. Bluetooth would be nice but wouldn't be a must-have.
So help a girl out?

Installing a radio in an 850 is simple.. The trick is to get all the accessories with your radio. ie; Adapter plug (so you DONT cut wires) and 2nd din pocker or blockoff..
Ive used alpine for years but my most recent install in my 850 was a pioneer..
see the pics below.

If you order from crutchfield they include all the install accessories and install instructions for free. and their shipping is super fast Ive used them for the passed 12 years and have never had a problem..
Click the link below, You enter you year make and model and they will tell you what will fit..----->Car Selector
