01 S40 problem starting

I have a 2001 Volvo s40 1.9. When I try to start it and it cranks but wont start. If I retry it will start the second time and smell gas. What should I be looking at? Thank you in advance

Had a similar problem on my 97 S90. Ever since I replaced the MAF it starts first time every time. Though mine was setting a rich code too.

Problem was the fuel filter. Changed it runs fine now
