Default Advise needed on purchase of older v70

Looking for a car that is larger and safe for my family. I like the idea of an older v70, maybe 1998 - 2000. What should I be looking for? My thought was that they are well built and if well cared for, could last a long time? I think new cars are overpriced and have too many computer driven parts. Am I an idiot about to throw this money away or do I make any sense?
Any input would be considered helpful.

The '98 would be best if you want less computer stuff.

The 850's are almost the same car. I recently purchased a '95 with 188,000 on it and plan to use it as a daily driver for many years.

Buy the last year production of whatever model you can afford. That way you can be (somewhat) assured all the kinks have been worked out...

Huh, not good advise in this case. When Volvo rolls out a car, the KINKS are usually already worked out. Back in the early 80's they put over a million miles on the 760 GLE before they started selling them. When the S/V70's were put on the road, the car was basically the 850 with 700 improvements. The last to years of the car's run, Volvo started new electronic controlled items, such as their drive by wire throttle system which is good, howbeit an expensive repair when the car is older as these are.

I do understand that it's usually not real good to get an early model car, as in the first year run but once they are 2 or 3 years into it any kinks should be worked out, or they never will be.
