Default Running acetone with gasoline increasing MPG

Hey everyone. I've been looking for ways to save at the pump since I live in Michigan where gas is through the roof. The onlytips Isee on msn is to keep the car tuned up and remove excess weight. REALLY? They must all be geniuses over there at msn! So I started searching deeper. I came across this man who had been testing several different additives. One of them is acetone. I was certainly skeptical at first. After reading more and more I decided, what the hell. I tried it. It's been a week nowand more than 200 miles, with no ill affects (as it should be. Acetone will not cause damage to your vehicle). I am amazed - I drive my car HARD; I accelerate quickly, drive 80 on the hwy, and stop pretty hard. I didn't expect seea real change in mileage to be honest, but I have noticed a real difference. I can say I've seen 4-5 MPG increase city/hwy mixed on my first tank. I'd like to hear any comments from anyone else who may have tried this. I will be posting more info about my results after I get more miles under my belt. Btw, my car has 100K miles, so it's far from new.

Here is a link to the site if you want to do your own research:

For anyone who wants the cliffnotes on it: the ratio is 2-3 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of gas.

You could save at the pump by not driving 80MPH on the roads and accelerating hard. Yeah I know it is fun and is your routine but try it and see how much you save.

BTW I have a 1999 s70 awd and I fill up every two weeks. Only about twice a month. Also by using higher grade gas at least in my case I gained a few MPG more.

No offense, my point was 'in spite the fact' that I drive fast, I'm still seeing an increase. I already know that 'taking it easy' saves fuel. It wouldn't be news if I stated that I was able to save gas by keeping my foot out of the pedal. Most of my trips include short-distance city followed by short distance hwy - lots of stop and go then hard acceleration. I just wanted to explain how I was able to get my increase (no hidden strings like 'just change the way you drive' is all). It's not like one of those 'Get a free ipod nano' offers where you have to jump through a dozen hoops in order to get something. You put a small amount of acetone in your gas, you will get results.

But point taken.

I know what you were saying and all I was saying was that you would see more of an improvement by doing some other things as well. Even if they are the most obvious things in the world.

1. "How much acetone do I put into my fuel? For gasoline we use two or three oz. per ten US gallons. Sometimes we use 1 oz. Torco GP-7 per ten gallons with the acetone. For diesel we use about two oz. acetone per ten US gallons. That is equal to about 2.5 ml per liter for gasoline and about 1.5 ml per liter for diesel. Any tiny amount is better than none. No engine can deliver good MPG without some acetone in the fuel. Acetone is one of the slowest burning fuel additives known. All the other methyl bearing molecules are slow burners. If you put too much of these into the gasoline, the fuel will burn slowly and you will lose efficiency. Knock causes fuel to burn suddenly. Too much acetone or xylene may cause slow combustion and/or too high an octane rating. The correct idea is to make combustion go at the right speed and have excellent vaporization to produce the best possible efficiency. We are further testing some excellent additives."

Here take a look at these websites. Which took me no more then 1 minute to find via GOOGLE's search engine.

The one link is to what the MYTHBUSTERS concluded when they tested it and they say it is BUSTED.

It's also not good for your hoses/car to constantly put additives in it..

As far as it not being 'safe' - believe what you will. As far as it not being 'good' - it's good for my wallet!
There's a whole lot of information out there (as long as you get it from an unbiased source) in support of acetone. Gasoline contains more than 80 different substances in it. Its not just petroleum, or else all gas would be the same from station to station. If a part is safe for gas/petroleum then I don't think acetone is going to hurt any.

Ask yourself this - why use gas that has ethanol content? Ethanol hurts gas mileage, by as much as 30%. Yet did you question it's safety? How does it burn? How does it affect components? Once you know the science behind everything, then make up your mind. (I'm not knocking ethanol, just making a point)
