So I think the starter is bad on this 1982 240. I managed to break the bottom bolt loose and can get a wrench on the top but not enough room to break loose. How can you get a socket on there? And for some reason my bolts are 3/4.

 

if its tight you may need to use a "crows foot" wrench or a long box end - use plenty of PB Blaster if needed. You sure your 3/4s aren't really 19mm's?

 

Hey thnx for responding man, Ya I was having trouble gripping the bottom one because I had too much play with the 19mm wrench and could see it that I could possibly strip it, 18mm was too small so I said why not tried it and 3/4 fits on it snug. I had to go out and buy a 3/4 wrench cause I didn't have a small one to fit underneath can't really use a jack cause it's parked on a slope.

 

Ok so here's the update. I caved in and paid a mechanic $60 to change it. I bought a crows foot wrench but didn't get to try it. My landlord didn't allow me to work on the car and my gf told me not to do it so I listen but went my own route. Car started to turn over but no start. Getting kicked out of my place now cuz of working on the car. I didn't know the mechanic knocked on the landlords door looking for me...fml whatever moved the car today worked on it some more. Got it started. Fuel pump relay is out. The guide to stating it is helpful. New promblem. Car wont stay on. Key turns back to off position. Bad ignition system? Car stays on. if I hold it down that's bad for the starter right?
