Default 1996 940 Total electrical failure while driving

Hello, I am Jane from Durham. I have a 1996 940 with an intermittent fault. Engine stutters and all lights flicker, and radio needs the code re-entered regularly. ABS light now stuck on, coolant gauge flickers when engine first starts, then stops working. Battery is not being drained, and other electrics still work. Feels like all electrical power is being cut for a second. So far car has no problem starting or running. Just wondered if it could be the alternator and or voltage regulator? Would be grateful for any advice please. Many Thanks, Jane

It is possibly it is one of those but I would also have the battery terminals checked.

Hello, just been out and checked the battery terminals. Found a 35 amp fuse in a separate holder coming away from the battery. Don't know why it should be there, looks like a bodge job. Checked in the Haynes Manuel, and it states the largest fuse shouldbe 30 amp. I was under the impression all of the fuses were under the ashtray. ???? Thanks, Jane

35 amp is big for a fuse, maybe it's a dodgy replacement for a 'fusible link'.
I'd start by disconnecting and cleaning the battery cables, at the battery, and at the gnd, starter ends.
I'd also have the alternator tested just to be safe, although I don't believe it would be faulty.

Maybe also check the main cables to make sure there not shorting out.

Faulty ignintion barrel could give similar problms.....

Hi, have cleaned the leads from the battery, it's made some difference, the car does not seem to be cutting out as much and is definitely ticking over better. Do you think I should fit a smaller fuse, or lose the fuse altogether? Thanks, Jane

Is there a tow bar fitted?

Some fitters who do not know the Volvo wiring system for tow bars will wire from the battery and need to put a 30 or 35 amp in-line fuse at that point.

Before changing the fuse, I'd find out what it's spossed to protect.

Hi, yes there is a towhitch, the gentleman who had the car before me had a caravan. The fuse holder (which was after market fitting) was broken, and the wire has been rubbing on the wheel arch. I have repaired the holder and just left the fuse. Oddly, the Lambda sensor light (which has been lit for a while) has now gone out after cleaning the connections to the battery, although, the ABS light which came on at the same time as the total electrical failure has remained on. Thanks for your help, Jane
