Default 1998 s70 timing belt cover/noise

Two days ago my 98' s70 started making some engine noise. When I opened the hood I noticed that the sound was coming from the timing belt cover. Upon futher review when adjusting the belt cover it seemed to effect the noise. I then noticed that the cover was shredded in the same area as the pulley's. I cracked the cover open a bit, the engine running, and noticed the belt was moving a little bit, which caused the plastic to shred. After I turned the car off I pulled the cover open the best I could & found a 3 inch round piece of metal that seemed to come from somewhere?? I'm guessing this piece kept the belt tight against the pulleys??? Not sure. It has 96,000 miles. I assume it needs a new belt. $400???

Needs a new timing belt and pulleys ASAP.
Do not start again or it might throw the belt and bend valves.

Sounds likeyoureally lucked out finding this before it threw the belt off. It's really not that hard to do the belt yourself. If you were able to get the cover off and find those pieces, I'm thinking you are mechanical enough to do the belt yourself and save about $250.

Well, apparently the tension pully was shot which led to the belt moving around. The volvo dealer replaced the tensioner & timing belt. Started the car & hear some noise that the servicer counter guy described as not good." Apparently the belt did slip four teeth & the mechanic believes some damage ws done. That is all I know so far until this Monday.

Did all or some of the valve bend? What are we talking to repair??? This is a 98 s70 w/96,000 miles. Aprox worth $4000-$5000. I really do not want to dump a ton of money in it.

I would say you are looking at about 3K to repair.

Well the dealer came back at $3100. Thoughts on what it's worth to someone who can fix it themselves? I was thinking around $800-$1000

Is it a T5 or a GLT, automatic or five speed? No matter what to fix it somebody will have to put over $1200 into it even if they do the work themself. So to fix it they are talking $800 to buy and at least another $1200 plus all the work involved. You might want to try just parting it out which is the way to get the most money out of it or find somebody who wants to buy it for parts. Unless it's a T5M in which case I might be interested.
