Default 2000 S40 vs 1997 850 R

Hi Everyone,

I have come across what I believe may be an opportunity. As many know, I currently drive a 2000 S40 with 93,000 miles. It currently has nothing major wrong with it. Yes I even got the nasty P0014 code to go away, for the last 2 weeks anyway. The only thing is the turbo oil return line is leaking. But it looks like every Volvo has that, must be engineered into it. And the t-belt was changed about 500 miles ago. MPG is running about 24 city, 35 highway.

I have come across a 1997 850 R. Auto trans, 168,000 miles, t-belt changed at 145,000, full dealer service records up to 120,000 checkup. Local original dealer, 1 owner, local trade in. The garage that has it is renowned for Volvos, he just got it and let me see it before he puts it out for sale. He said he is going to change plugs, wires, fluids, etc. Fix it up in general. He said his target price was going to be at least$5,000. Who knows, when he is done, it may be out of my range. The car is completely original.

My wife said I can't have both. Do you recommend making the switch? I have been bouncing back and forth between why get rid of a perfectly good auto and owning a nice relatively unique car. Also it would help if I told her the "forum is behind me." I'm not looking for anyone to tear apart one or the other, just if you were in this position, what would you do? Help me justify it. Also, if I do get it and it is a piece of crap, I will hold you all personally responsible. LOL.

IMO I would take a 850R over a S40 any day of the week.
850R faster!!!!
850R Looks alot better!!!!
IMO the 850R will out last the S40 by far!!!!
S40 can be more of a PITA to work on compaired to the 850R!!!!

So you get my Opinion.

Yeah, I think I understand you position. LOL. One thing, I am learning initials as I go, but what the HECK does IMO stand for?

But yes, my absolute dream is an S70 T5, but this is relatively close. And I have read other threads about having service records, and this does. Now the stamps in the service book stop at 120,000, but I am going to get the vin and see if the dealer has more on it. The service manager and I have gotten to know each other and I'm sure he will give me at least the background in general if not the detailed records out of the computer.

I'm going to show the post to my wife when I get home. It's funny how even though they love you, hearing the same answer from someone elsecarries more weight. I'll wait to hear from some more people. Thanks tech, as always.

Nevermind, IMO, in my opinion. No one ever accused me of being the brightest bulb.

Sounds good I REALLY hope you decide to buy it.
The 850R cars are getting really rare and having one will be a nice touch to just about anyones Garage.

Im not really a Big fan of the S40 either.
