Hi
I have a 1999 Volvo v70 Cross Country--2.4L--Turbo. It had a few
problems which I put it in the shop for and one was the smell of exhaust
coming thru the vents when I have the heater on when the car is idling. Itdoes this even with the recirc on.
The mechanics said that that was a leak in the exhaust so I paid to have
the exhaust manifold replaced. I have the car back now and the fumes are
still there. I have 5 young children and I also would like to live a
long, healthy life. ON top of worrying that the exhaust manifold was
replaced for no good reason I am very concerned about this problem. Its
cold here in winters in way NOrthern California. Any idea what could be
causing this? To save you time, I will let you know that I also had some
work done on the oil something or other, so I don't think its leaking
oil on the exhaust.

I know you say exhaust smell but are you sure it is that and not burning oil?
Also does it smell sweet?

 

Funny you should ask. You know that stink you get when your vents are open and you're drivingbehind a vehicle with obvious exhaust problems. Well, that's what it smells like thru the vents in my car. The smoke or vapor coming out of the exhaust pipe in back of the car (when it is warming on a cold day) smells more sweet. Its a little sickening. [:'(]

Maybe kind of lioke maple syrup?
If so the heater core might be leaking.
